We departed Fort Lauderdale at 9:30 for North Eleuthera with perfect weather. Most of the 25 plus planes had overnighted in Fort Pierce and we soon became aware of a gaggle of Cirrus heading for our destination island. The flight was the typical beautiful trip over absolutely beautiful water.

We were one of the first to land but it was a steady stream of Cirrus coming into North Eleuthera airport. We were quickly moved through customs, met by the Bahamas tourism official with a welcome rum punch and wisked to the ferry and our hotels. In our case the Coral Sands, but others were staying on the harbor side at Valentines, where the water taxi took them directly to their hotel.

Once settled in, everyone started exploring Harbor Island. In our case we had lunch with some of our group at Coral Sands them did some sight seeing. By the way golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation and many rented one. Harbor Island has many sites to see.

The opening reception was held at a great Bahamian place called Gusty’s. Dirt floor, local band playing, local drinks, lots of Kahlik and rum punch poured and all of the appropriate arrival festivities. Door prizes of course and we discovered that COPA had hidden talent on the fashion runway from two of our legal professionals one from Texas and the other from California. The trip got off to a great start.

It turned out that our arrival day was my birthday. We had dined at a place called the Rock House were we stayed on our previous visit, so that was our choice for our dinner. It turned out to again, be superb and we had a delightful evening trying to remember how the hell old we are.

The Bahamian tourism bureau had arranged for discounts for COPA at select shops, which had a welcome COPA sign on their door. Everyone headed for their favorite form of adventure, including beach time, sight seeing, shopping, diving, eating and anything else your laid back heart desired. For us we rented a golf cart, and although we had been to Harbor Island before we did some sight seeing, and had lunch a great little restaurant overlooking the beach called Sip Sip.

Saturday was a day of “optional side activity” such as snorkeling, continued site seeing and shopping or just hanging out. The weather was a big topic since a tropical disturbance had moved into the Bahamas and the Keys moving in our direction. It was overcast but warm, with the trade winds picking up. We relaxed, chatted with others who chose to hang out, had lunch again at Sip Sip and did a little more site seeing. There was a reception at Valentines resort in the evening. Everyone obviously had enjoyed their stay and were a little bit sad to be leaving so soon. Joyce and I then had dinner with the “organizers”, Joe, Nancy and Jim at a restaurant called The Landings. The food and company were great and we had a fine evening. We were all packed and had done everything to get ready for tomorrows departure, so it was bed time.

We woke up to the sound of rain, heavy rain and talked to Flight Service and filed. The disturbance had moved north but we could skirt the real bad stuff and get to Fort Pierce safely. We left the hotel in the rain, took the ferry to North Eleuthera in the rain and arrived at the airport in the rain. When we cleared customs and they pulled the plane up the rain stopped and ceiling lifted. We left at 9:30 climbed to 3000 feet got our clearance, climbed to 8000 feet through moderate rain showers and clouds, got between layers at 8000 feet and asked to stay there. We were in and out of showers to Grand Bahama Island then out of the clouds and landed in Fort Pierce with a visual approach on time at 11:00. We cleared customs, refueled, grabbed sandwiches to go, and were in the air at noon and home in Hilton Head by 2:00, in the afternoon in time to see the end of the golf on TV and have dinner with friends.

It was a fun trip thanks to Joe McMonigle, Nancy and Jim knowllenberg for all their hard work and all of the attendee’s who joined us from all across the US and Canada.

On our way to the Bahamas we stopped in Fort Lauderdale to visit Jen, Mike and Alexandra and have an early Birthday dinner for Gil. We had a great flight down, lunch with Jen and then picked Alexandra from school. We then drove to the stables near the school for Alexandra’s weekly riding lesson. Joyce and I were blown away by how accomplished a horse woman Alexandra has become.

We had a very nice dinner outdoors at one of Gil’s favorite restaurants and celebrated his up coming birthday. The next morning it was off to the Bahamas.

Heidi, Gary, Brenn, Caitlin and Kinsey Prado met Joyce and I at Spring Island for Easter Sunday festivities. The Easter egg hunt was a success judging from the eggs collected and sugar consumed. The kids loved the play ground particularly the tree house and swings, with lots of energy expended to work up an appetite for the very elaborate brunch. Before brunch everyone visited the Nature Center which the kids always enjoy. After brunch a brief stop at the Chechessee cottage and then back to Savannah for the Prado’s.

Harold Yanofsky and I flew to Plant City Florida to attend Sun ‘n Fun held in near by Lakeland March 27. We had a great flight down, landed, tied down and were at the event in time for lunch. Sun ‘n Fun includes loads of static displays by all the GA aircraft manufactures, war bird, vintage, experimental and just about anything that fly’s. In addition there are four huge buildings housing displays of everything you can imagine that is associated with aircraft ownership. It’s an aviation enthusiasts paradise.

We only had Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning so we did a quick tour of the whole area, took in the airshow Tuesday evening and then focused on areas of specific interest. We attended the Avidyne customer appreciation cookout, to get the latest from my avionics supplier. Harold was interested in checking out light sports, so we spent considerable time there. We both enjoyed the war birds as well as the vintage aircraft. By Wednesday we had done a pretty good job of covering the bases we set out to cover and headed back to the airport. We plowed through lots of build ups going home, but made it back in around two hours. Overall it was a intense aviation experience rubbing shoulders with lots of other people that automatically look up when something flies over.

Our best friend Bruce Edwards was being honored by the University of California, Davis (Cal Aggie) so we decided to sandwich a quick trip to California between our Bahamas trip and a golf trip to Florida. Life is tough! We flew to Los Angels, to visit Joyce’s brother Ray and his companion Sue on February second. We spend the day and next morning in L.A., then flew to San Francisco, then drove to Sonoma. We had a great visit with Ray and Sue and enjoyed their view of Catalina Island from their deck and some good California sea food. The trip to S.F. was exciting, getting to drive in rush hour traffic on Friday night across the Golden Gate Bridge, thankfully, we had a great meal and good bottle of wine as our reward.

Saturday we had breakfast a the Big Three at the Sonama Mission Inn, then headed out to do some wine tasting. The objective was some Zinfandel and we heard about a great one at Kunde vineyard. We also wanted to see if the Matanzas Creek vineyard was still producing quality Merlot. It was a perfect winter day in the Sonoma Valley and we enjoyed the drive and were not disappointed in the wine. Kunde has a Zin produced from hundred year old vines that we like a lot and a case was on the way to SC. We liked their Chardonnay as well, so another case was ordered. We toured the Kunde wine caves and were comfortable that they had plenty of good wine coming. Matanzas Creek also was worth the drive and we bought their Merlot and Chardonnay, so it was a successful wine buying and tasting trip. We were reminded of how beautiful California, and especially the wine country is and how the vineyards add to the romance with the settings they create.

The main reason for the trip was to attend our best friend, Bruce Edwards award ceremony held at the Jacuzzi Winery in Sonoma Saturday night. It was a black tie affair with appropriate splendor to toast the recipients. Bruce was honored for his support and service to UC Davis and we were proud to join his family to honor him. One of Bruce’s other guests was Ken Sandy one of our high school football team mates, (he was good), who brought a picture from our high school period. I am posting it here and there should be a prize if you can name the characters. It does provide some insight into our beginnings in Danville, Calfiornia in the fabulous fifties.

We had a leisurely breakfast at the Sonoma Mission Inn and headed for San Francisco for lunch. Fisherman’s Wharf and dunginess crab for lunch was the objective. It was a great winter day in S.F. and we strolled the wharf and took in the tourists and other sights, then succumbed to the smell of fresh boiled crab and sour dough french bread. Just add a glass of wine, a view of the Golden Gate Bridge, fishing boats tied up at the wharf, and it was nostalgia time for us.

After a great lunch, we checked into our hotel and watched Kyle Stanley, a PGA golf pro from Bluffton South Carolina, execute a come from behind win to redeem himself. We then watched the NY Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. If the 49ers couldn’t be there the Giants would do. A celebratory dinner, a good nights sleep, a flight to Hilton Head via Charlotte and we were back home Monday evening. It was a whirl wind weekend, but fun.
