Michigan

After lunch in Duluth, we flew the roughly two hour hop to Harbor Springs at the upper end of Lake Michigan. Nice airport and we were quickly tied down with the help of Neil from the town FBO, who brought our rental car to the plane. It was a short 15 minute drive to the Perry Hotel in the small town of Petoskey. The Pier restaurant was recommended for dinner, which is in Harbor Springs and we were not disappointed in the food and a great sunset view. Tuesday, after a big breakfast at the hotel we explored the town of Petoskey in the morning then headed to Harbor Springs for lunch and more exploration. Petoskey is has a lots of little shops and is a clean, quaint tree lined town.
We had a late lunch on the dock in Harbor Springs and toured the shops in town and then the surrounding area. Magnificent old houses, views of the bay, and lots of little shops is what this town is all about.
On Wednesday we drove south to sight see the Lake Michigan coast down to Traverse City. Beautiful country side with small farms, fruit stands and small towns made for a pleasant trip. The highlight was the pretty little town of Charlevoix. On a small lake with the channel to the big lake, this town features lots of boats on the water front and the usual assortment of shops. We explored Charlevoix then headed on to Traverse City, which is much larger and less charming. We headed back having satisfied our curiosity about the part of Michigan we had heard so much about.
That evening we enjoyed the culinary highlight of our trip at a restaurant named Chandlers in Petoskey, which was outstanding. We checked the weather and packed for our return trip. Thursday dawned overcast with some sprinkles but our two and a half hour flight back to Dayton was uneventful and as always it was good to be back home.
